I handled the new Canadian $50 bill for the first time today. The back of the bill depicts the statue of the Famous Five which stands in Olympic Plaza in Calgary, not more than a five minute walk from here. No, this isn't Enid Blyton's Famous Five, but rather a group of Alberta women who were involved in a famous court case -- the "Persons" case -- which in 1929 established that women are persons and can serve in the Senate. It is kind of astonishing that attitudes were so different little more than 75 years ago.
