Pierre Berton has died. Probably no one outside of Canada knows who he is, but he was a Canadian icon, a prolific writer of popular history and a TV personality. He was a panelist for something like 40 years on Front Page Challenge, a show that was hilariously parodied by SCTV.

Much of what SCTV did was a take-off on Canadian television. Did people in the US realize that Martin Short was parodying Canadian interviewer Brian Linehan (who also died recently) with his Brock Linehan character?

When I'm in a store lately and see a copy of People magazine or one of its clones, I often don't recognize the people on the cover. The current crop of celebrities just doesn't seem to mean that much to me. I may be turning into an old fogey, but I'm comfortable with that.
