I had a good day at work. Yesterday I had spent a couple of hours wrestling with a program change request. I knew what was required, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to do it. I thought it through last night, and when I came in this morning I was able to get it finished by mid-morning. It's odd, but I often find it easier to do conceptual work when I'm away from work and under no pressure.

Next I had to change a report from legal to letter size. The report had a form overlay to simulate a pre-printed government form (with boxes, shading and headings). In theory, I should have been able to change the default font size, run the textual form description through a utility to convert it to PCL printer commands, and the job would have been almost done. Unfortunately that didn't work, because there were several bugs in the conversion utility, which was written in awk, a Unix scripting language I'm not familiar with. I was able to find the bugs and fix them, and after making some additional cosmetic changes to the form, I was done.

And so ended another work week.

I've been thinking about getting a new camera, and I'm interested in the Panasonic FZ series. There are several models, each with a Leica lens, 12x optical zoom and image stabilization. They're a little low on pixels -- from 3 to 5 megapixels -- but with the zoom lens, that may be more than adequate. They have new models due out shortly, so I'll wait... I'm in no rush.

A few examples of trees broken by the accumulation of snow, as mentioned in my last post. The snow is gone, but the damage remains.
