Stamp issued to commemorate 60 years on the throne.
Alexandrina Victoria was born May 24, 1819. She became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on June 20, 1837, and Empress of India on January 1, 1877. She died on January 22, 1901 after almost 64 years on the throne.
May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was first declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. It is now celebrated on the Monday preceding May 25th. To most Canadians today, it is simply a holiday from work, with no other significance.
