I see that The GIMP 2.0 has been released, and they now have Windows and OS X versions. It's an open-source/freeware photo editor, formerly available only for Unix, and seems to be very well regarded as a Photoshop alternative. I'm happy with my Corel Photo-Paint, but if I was looking for photo editing software, something better than what comes free with digital cameras, I'd definitely try GIMP.
