Bit rot

I'm starting a project to archive my CDs on hard drives, and on my first attempt I found that 2 out of 10 CDs couldn't be copied successfully (using Exact Audio Copy). The discs in question are over 20 years old and must have fallen prey to the dreaded bit rot. I don't know the technical explanation, but I think CDs are made with chemical dyes that can degrade over time. Or something. In any case, I will be replacing a few discs.

We had a minor blizzard this evening. It was fun to watch the huge snowflakes (some of them at least an inch across) floating or racing past my window, depending on the speed and direction of the wind. On the other hand, it's April 24th, not December 24th. Enough already with the snow!
