Living in the wild, wild West

Woman survives grizzly attack in Banff -- There have been several bear attacks in the Banff area this summer. Another woman was killed by a bear near Canmore (not far from Banff) a few months ago. I've been wanting to take a day trip to Banff, but L doesn't like the idea. She says she might go if she could take a bazooka, but I think there is some silly law about that.

Don't covet our cash -- Because of high oil and gas prices, Alberta may have a $7 billion budget surplus this year. I'd like to see some of that money used for tax cuts and infrastructure here in Alberta, but there are already attempts from other provinces to concoct some kind of "revenue-sharing" scheme. Meanwhile, according to a poll conducted in July, 35.6 per cent of westerners agreed with the statement: "Western Canadians should begin to explore the idea of forming their own country." In Alberta, 42 per cent agree, and any NEP-style cash grab by the federal government would send that number much higher.
