The other day I came across an article about a German tourist who almost died while attempting to drive the Canning Stock Route in Western Australia. I was reminded that the last time we were in Australia, some friends of L's family showed us a video of a 4WD trip they had taken along this track. This was a journey they made every year, taking two or three weeks to traverse 1200 miles of remote and inhospitable desert. Apart from the beautiful Australian outback landscapes, what I remember most from the video was the difficulty they had getting over sand dunes, frequently having to back up and take another run at them. We briefly considered joining them for their next trip, but it didn't happen. Probably a little extreme for us, anyway.
