I've been fooling around with MP3 encoding, and after finding the Hydrogenaudio FAQs, I upgraded to a new version of the LAME encoder and started using the --alt-preset standard option instead of --r3mix. Could even the RCA Victor dog hear any difference? Well, maybe. The resulting variable bit rate now averages around 200, instead of the 170 I used to get.

I greatly enjoyed my 3-day weekend, and the enjoyment was augmented by the thought that I will be having long weekends right through the summer (and beyond).
