Word for the day: bummy. As in, "Be careful when you go out, Neil. It gets bummy around this time of day." Meaning that the yuppies and business people have gone home, and there are a lot of winos and street people around.

What a neighborhood. A few days ago, there was a gang shooting in the area. Twelve shots fired in a car chase. The car ended up in front of our building; the young Vietnamese driver was take to hospital. We saw the car later, all four doors open, secured by a yellow crime-scene tape while the police gathered evidence.

I guess this is typical of the downtown area in any large city. The bad stuff usually happens in the middle of the night. During the day, about the worst that happens is being asked for spare change, or having to walk past someone sleeping on the sidewalk.
